what is the origin of the following stereotype: indians are uncivilized savages?
please post a link to the website where you found this information.

r u talking native americans or Indian indians

wes | Oct 26, 2007

RED INDIAN - "An offensive name for Native Americans, but a historical term applied by the British to North American Indians, apparently because of ‘their copper-colored skin’ and to distinguish them semantically from the Indians of India. From ‘Red Indian’ came the derogatory word redskin." From "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997).

LOS INDIOS, INDIAN, SAVAGE, NOBLE SAVAGE — "Since the original inhabitants of the Western Hemisphere neither called themselves by a single term nor understood themselves as a collectivity, the idea and image of the Indian must be a White concept..The term ‘Indian’ as a general designation for the inhabitants of North and South America in addition to some Asians stems from the erroneous geography of Christopher Columbus. Under the impression he had landed among the islands off Asia, he called the peoples he met ‘los Indios.’ Although he quite self-consciously gave new names to islands upon his first voyage, his application of the term ‘Indios’ seems to have been almost casual."

Seventeenth-century Frenchmen, Italians, and Englishmen generally employed a variant of the Latin ’silvaticus,’ meaning a forest inhabitant or man of the woods, for the Indian as the earlier spellings of ’saulvage,’ ’salvaticho,’ and ’salvage’ show so well in each of the respective languages. English usage switched from ’savage’ to ‘Indian’ as the general term for Native Americans in the seventeenth century, but the French continued to use ’sauvage’ as the preferred word into the nineteenth century. The original image behind this terminology probably derives from the ancient one associated with the ‘wild man,’ or ‘wilder Mann’ in Germany."

No website posted. Origin comes from there lack of education and a few other things back in the day Whites and Indians were settleing the land. They were forced from the land they occupied , introduced to whiskey, had there wives taken from them, there was torture in some cases, and with this, they were just rebelious and reacted in only the way they knew.Plus there was a difference in language too.
carla b | Oct 26, 2007

My son did a report on Native Americans. It was very detailed - A+. We did a lot of research for this and one of our acquaintances came over and gave us a lot of info that was handed down to him from generation to generation. He is a Native American and was very interesting. He gave my son a blessing to use and a ritual handing over of some sweet grass.

The arrogant white men are the ones that stereotyped them as savages because of the way they lived and acted, which was different than them. Typical isn’t it? Just like today in some instances. Funny how they called them savages but it was the Natives that got them through the winter and taught them how to live and hunt in the new world.

Natives are mostly lactose intolerant.

Natives did not use alcohol before the white man came.

They did not use seasonings on their food like the white man.

They also bathed quite regularly. The white men did not and could be smelled a mile away. That’s how they knew white men were around - they smelled.

They had their own religion, and our constitution is set up like that of the Seneca Nation.
Morgana | Oct 26, 2007

That was the view of Europeans, who compared everyone to their own view of civilization. To them, being civilized meant reading and writing, fancy clothes, permanent settlements, Christianity (and the associated morality), and mechanical invention. The less one fit that stereotype, the less civilized one was.
Nightwind | Oct 26, 2007

i guess back then white men didn’t understand other races
culture,so to them it was savage and uncivilized hence destroying whatever they touched
treekgomon | Oct 26, 2007

That was just a racist term used to describe the fighting tactics of the Real Americans. The ones who were defending themselves from foreign invaders.
Yahoo | Oct 26, 2007

I am not aware of any website to link the information which you have mentioned. Perhaps it might have been addressed to the American red Indians.
sreenivasa m | Oct 27, 2007

They had a different culture from the Europeans, so the result was that the European setltlers considered them savages. Plus, it becomes a lot easier to steal someone else’s land if you dehumanize them by calling them names like that.

Since when is beer non-intoxicating? I was looking up a persons record on the court records for a friend and
he was convicted of "minor in possession of non-intoxicating beverage - beer".

There are non-alcoholic beers (i.e. Amstel Light) & non-alcoholic wines. It is illegal for a minor to purchase or possess either one.

CGIV76 | Sep 10, 2007

Maybe in some states you have to be 21 to consume O’Douls. But I find that pretty funny.
Matt D | Sep 10, 2007

Because one beer doesn’t necessarily intoxicate you. But that is a bit baffling. I assume if it was hard liquor that would be a different story.
Ana Makes Art. | Sep 10, 2007

there are several "beers" out there that are non alcoholic like O’Doul’s
cherrihill | Sep 10, 2007

Must be a red state.
mild_irritant | Sep 10, 2007

There are a few non-alcoholic beers (or at least with very low alcohol content), like O’doul’s
K | Sep 10, 2007

Perhaps they meant the minor was not intoxicated. But had the beer, I’ve never heard of such an ordinance.
Stozzz | Sep 10, 2007

there’s not a middle point with beer, you drink enough and
you’re very refreshed. You drink more and you’re drunk or
falling down smashed. But never, ever are you intoxicated.
Mc Duff | Sep 10, 2007

You are aware that you looking someones records up without probable reason is illegal right?

If you are in a position where you have access to court records then you really need to study the U.S. constitution.
nofx | Sep 10, 2007

since when is looking up court records illegal???? ^^

CNN - Why is CNN so racist, negative about anything from the gov. and criticizes wrongfully any president?

oktober 18th, 2009 by lenokbvloh1

Just look at Lou Devil Dobbs and the rest of the CNN workers.
I call them workers because they don’t have any reporter features in them, they just sit there to brainwash people ignoring that their only job is to inform, and that’s it.

I can’t tolerate Dobbs, Blitzer or any of the "news" programs on CNN.
However, FOX "news" is in the same ratings frenzy campaign of misinformation as CNN.
I just tried to watch both channels a couple of minutes ago and I didn’t last five minutes with either one.

Does anyone out there know of a news channel that really is unbiased and factual? Seriously.

re-pixed | Sep 08, 2009

:Lou Dobbs, need not to talk about no one in a negative way. He is like Rush Limbaugh’s Brother. I believe he is.
shop2early | Sep 08, 2009

CNN criticizes the president based on his speeches, record in office and his choices for government positions. No news agency has criticized him for his mixed race heritage. As a Harvard educated lawyer he is aware that scrutiny is part of the the news medias job and quite capable of defending himself from racial attacks. As racial attacks are against the Civil Rights Act the US attorney general would automatically take action against the media, owners and broadcasters if they were.
chukthunder | Sep 08, 2009

People will say that there is no racism. But racism has become a little more subtle but just as destructive. Code words and comparisons to all the evil dictators in history has replaced the "N" word. The effects are the same and like thinkers read between the lines and shout indignantly that it is all responsible criticism. Hogwash, careful don’t step in it.

Where The Wild - What is the difference between salmon and Wild Salmon and where do I get wild salmon?

oktober 17th, 2009 by lenokbvloh1

I live in the midwest. Where do I get wild salmon?

Wild salmon is just that, caught in the wild. Most salmon is farm raised, been feed the same food their entire life and as a result, people say is less tasty. There is also concern with corn feed as not being too good for you, so if the fish only eats corn feed, then there are sometimes health concerns. The flesh of the wild salmon is redder looking, and the meat tastes gamier. It’s definately worth trying even if it does costs a few more dollar/pound. Go to the local fish guy and see if he can get it for you, otherwise shipping will make it cost a lot more per pound.

Here’s a mail order place:

http://www.wildpacificsalmon.com/

redwine | Jul 02, 2007

ask your local fish monger
Quasi | Jul 02, 2007

go to a better grocery store or ask around to see if there are any local seafood suppliers around…wild salmon is fish that is caught in the wild not farm raised….it is healtheir for you seeing how it is not feed vitimins and things that are not normally feed in the wild
becca9892003 | Jul 02, 2007

People are probably referring to farm raised salmon vs wild salmon. Farm raised salmon is really grey in color and actually gets its pink color from die in its food. It is raised in a controlled environment.

Wild salmon on the other hand is naturally dark pink/orange and much better in texture / flavor than its farm raised alternative.

Most people today in the US are eating farm raised salmon without even knowing it. Most salmon in grocery stores is farm raised. Expect to pay a premium for a REAL piece of wild salmon.

To identify it look for a very dark (pink / orange /red ) color compared to a lighter pinkish orange color in the farm raised salmon.
Lanksta | Jul 02, 2007

I live in the midwest also and we order Wild Alaskan Salmon from the Schwanns man. It’s not overly expensive and comes in a box already cut into filets.

www.schwanns.com

They will deliver just about anywhere…We live in the country and they’re here once a month (or however often you tell them to come out)
Mandy | Jul 02, 2007

Wild salmon is fished for and any other kind of salmon raised of a fish farm. Wild salmon can probably be bought at any fish market.

It came upon a Midnight Clear?
Please. They are playing this song at the mall and I think it is a newer version. Very Beautiful rendition and I can’t find out who does it. Does anyone know? It has a full orchestra and a male voice in the lead.

It’s a Christmas Carol so a bunch of people sing it. :)

Josh Groban does, of course…

Daryl Hall & John Oates…Sixpence None the Richer…. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, maybe.
